When should a ferret go back to the vet if you have concerns? We have a fer=
ret Taz that had a growth and his spleen removed. There were 3 other growth=
s that could not be removed. (surgery was12/12/03) Taz has been on antibiot=
ics and will take his last one today. His color seems off to me he looks a =
little yellow on his nose and his pads. (could this be because one of the g=
rowths that could not be removed is on his liver?) He is still sleeping qui=
te a bit and only eats if you bring food to him He will not get up to get a=
ny on his own. How long after a surgery should a ferret feel so low? I have=
had several other ferrets with surgeries but this is by far the most exten=
sive surgery. All our other ferrets were up and around just a day after sur=
gery, some were up and social the same day. Is this out of the norm? Should=
I take Taz back to see our vet before his is scheduled to this Friday (12/=
26) My other question is about dehydration. How can you tell if a ferret is=
dehydrated? Can you tell if dehydration is a small amount or if the ferret=
is in danger and needs more than just a little extra water?
As always thanks for our ideas
Jennifer

As for being dehydrated... there's the old pinch test of the skin in scruff area, but I've never found that to be very easy to interpret. "ME: Did it return fast enough? WIFE: I don't know, what do you think?", etc., etc. I like to check their gums and if they are dry or sticky, there is probably reason for concern. If they're moist and slimy (check your own for a comparison... OK everyone, get your finger out of your mouths) then he's probably OK, but since you're going to the vet anyway... :)
