When I read the post my immediate gut feeling was, "We'd be running to the vet right now."

For dehydration we find the gum test to be more reputable ourselves, but they are very subjective.

When you scruff a ferret the ferret will often loof downward and ahead enough that for a short while (till eyelids come into play you can see the whites of the eye from the side. If yellow then think jaundice more seriously.
