I have a 6 year old male ferret. He has had insulinoma for a little over a =
year. He had one surgery last September to remove his spleen, left adrenal =
gland and two inslet tumors. Last week he was on .45ml diazoxide and .37ml =
prednisolone 2X a day. We monitor his sugar at home. His sugar spikes 4 hou=
rs after his medicine then plumets down. Like 90 at its peak down to 50's. =
So to level it off we split it up to 4X a day. He also gets duck soup every=
three hours. The vet said we would probably have increase his meds a littl=
e. He is now on .24ml pred. 4x a day and .25ml diaz. 4X a day. Now his bloo=
d sugars have been constant but constantly low, like 40's and 50's. I know =
the glucometer is only about 80% accurate but I can tell by the way he is f=
eeling that it's way way too low. Now my questions, does anyone ever split =
medicine up like this? I am thinking of changing it to 3X a day instead. Al=
so I am not sure of the max dosages he can get. The prednisolone 15mg/5ml a=
nd the diazoxide is 5mg/0.1ml. The vet said she believed he could have 1ml =
a day max of each. If that's the case he's getting close to that now on the=
4X a day plan. Also why is he so low on the 4x a day schedule? His lowest =
on the 2X a day schedule was mid, usually high 50's. He also is very overwe=
ight and needs to shed a pound at least. We have to keep stuffing him with =
food though to get his BG up. It's not that the meds aren't working they ju=
st aren't working for long enough. The poor little guy wants to play so bad=
but he can't please someone offer some ideas!! The vet said he needs to lo=
ose the weight ASAP, she's worried about his heart.
