Unless a ferret has really good reason to not be a surgical candidate a
digestive tract blockage which can not be resolved needs surgery.

Obviously, with this going on for months it is a partial one since you
say that your vets are sure that it is a blockage.

In a complete blockage death from toxins can happen within 48 hours and
a rapid response is needed before that advances to the point where the
ferret is compromised.

A partial blockage can result in gastric or intestinal injury, even
perforation and peritonitis. It also can result in the inflammation of
nearby organs, especially the liver and sometimes the pancreas.

I have posted several times about Sidney. I am just so totally lost on what
is going on now. As I have already posted, we know its a blockage and its in
the colon. She has passed some of it. She was very dehydrated so as of Tuesday
(8-17-04) I have been giving her sub-Q fluids bid.
Today I noticed her stomach is bloated and she does not feel good at all. Of
course she has never felt well anyway. Her stomach is sensitive to be being
rubbed. She still has not passed the blockage. I can feel the blockage in her
colon on papable exam. She and I and the vet have been fighting so hard for her.
I just dont know what to do.
Does anyone know why her stomach is swollen now? I have slowed the fluids
down to once a day. She is drinking water and the glucerna well , through a
dropper. She will not go on her own to get a drink.
I really need some help or advice on what I should do. This has been going on
for 2 months now. The only good thing I have seen from her is her eyes are
brighter looking and her face does not look so hollow.

I am NOT a vet, but, sounds like you should take your fert to the vet right
NOW, have an x-ray, see if you can identify the possible foreign body in
your fert's tummy, and if evident, open Sidney up right away and have it
removed.

My Blizzard had a possible partial blockage. The vet gave him an inject of
fluid on the side of his back ($20), we gave him plenty of pedialyte and
ensure (as he was not eating kibbled food), plus plenty of ferretlax. His
tummy was not sore to the touch. He either passed something OR, and most
likely, he was "allergic" to the new carpeting in our new house.

Forgetting my Blizzard, take Sidney to your vet NOW!

Good luck and hope she and you feel better real soon!
