One question specific to my location: Up here in Fairbanks, Alaska, we
only get a couple hours of daylight during the winter... While myself
and my roommate are at work, the ferrets get many hours of darkness
during the day (for about three months of the year), as well as when
we are asleep at night.

During the summer, OTOH, they get no darkness for weeks on end. Would
it make sense, since they get sufficient darkness during ~1/3 of the
year, to only give them the implants each spring... so they'd be on
melatonin for the 4 'light' months of the year, but not during the
darker months when daylight is scarce enough that it's not a problem?
