I had a ferret who developed cataracts in both eyes, and he was less
than two years old at the time. He lived to be about eight years old,
and was completely blind most of his life....

When he first started developing them, I took him into the vet, and my
vet's response was that while it wasn't common at that young an age,
ferrets sometimes developed cataracts for no apparent reason. Don't
know if anything new has been learned since then, but the basic answer
at that time was "no idea why, it just happens sometimes."
