There are times when the root of a problem, or even an additional problem will be so well hidden that no one is going to find it until an additional symptom which just doesn't fit (like sudden massive ascites) develops. Then the right tests hopefully will pick up or suggest what is going on, and hopefully, it will be reasonably treatable.

In this case I'd really get the ferret to a vet rapidly because if that is what it looks like (ascites) it's really progressing. I'd also be inclined to have the local treating vet call through to the specialist you are using, or to place such a call myself and leave numbers for a call-back when the vet is available.

The pieces aren't fitting for the puzzle this is thought to be unless this ferret is very unusual, and ascites can be dangerous in and of itself, esp. when it interferes with breathing, plus it and its cause needs to be understood and tackled.

Has the pathology on the tissues removed come back, yet?
