This sure sounds like low blood glucose, probably as a result of insulinoma. Some symptoms of low blood glucose are drooling, nausea (pawing at the mouth), loss of coordination (drunken appearance, etc.), staring off into space, all the way up to seizures and coma. Sounds pretty much like what you're seeing, and this is an easy thing to check with a simple blood test of glucose levels.
