I wrote last weekend about a ferret with three cystoliths on radiograph and
ultrasound. His bloodwork and urinalysis were normal except for bleeding from
irritation. The pH was 6.0 with few WBC's, no bacteria, and no crystals. We
did a second urinalysis before surgery to double check this and the pH was
again 6.0 with no crystals.

He had a successful cystotomy today and the stones will, of course, be sent
to U of Minn for analysis. The stones were unusual on gross exam to the
veterinarian. She described them as dark greenish-black and "rubbery." Has anyone
seen stones (e.g. cystine) that looked like that? The tentative theory is
that he may have had an unknown UTI at some point and developed the stones then,
since he does not have any crystals now. Any other ideas?
