I think your situation sounds like one where you might benefit from having the Tennessee panel test run, and perhaps from doing an ultrasound before making any choices.

We had a boy who had GI tract deformities who underwent abdominal surgery 4 times. By the last the tissue of his stomach itself (not his skin) was so thin (from his progressive worsening) that this prevented further surgeries being possible. He lost external evidence of almost all of his nipples due to the skin being so often cut and stitched, but otherwise there was no down-side to his surgeries, and they provided him with comfort and extra time. Once he got past needing his IV he always acted more comfy after his surgeries than he had been beforehand.
