Not necessarily.
I've owned 6 ferrets privately. All were altered at 5.5 to 8.5 months
old. Two females went through a heat cycle (brought out with hormone
injection).
All 6 ferrets (2 males, 4 females) have had adrenal disease, with first
symptoms at ages 2.5 to 5 years old.
"Late" neutering is not the answer, if by late you mean around 6 months
old.
