The body normally makes melatonin on its own, so during times when the ferrets' own bodies are getting at least 14 hours of complete darkness I cna't imagine that they would need the added melatonin, but for any time when they are not getting at least 14 hours of darkness in each 24 hour period I would supect that they do need the added melatonin.
