Certainly, it is possible that there could be a genetic component which makes some ferret lines more vulnerable to certain inputs. In the U.S. a very large number of the lines (private and farm) ultimately trace back -- to at least some extent -- to one of the farms here which was where the most influential early popularizer of pet ferrets, the late Dr. Wendy Winstead, first got her breeders. (One of her kits was one of our earliest ferrets, personally.)
Do your ferrets who are outisde have ways to get out of the light, such as a shed, sleeping boxes, or dark bedding, as was historically used in much of Europe? If so, they may be making sure themselves that they get enough darkness.
