Could anyone who has experience with pain medications like opiods or
NSAIDS and prescribing to ferrets for surgery or even chronic pain let me know what
your prefer and what your experiences have been. I would like to know for
future reference as I took my ferret in for an adrenalectomy recently and no
pain meds were given.

I feel strongly that our pets deserve to be given pain medications after we
perform procedure that would be painful in us, whether or not they are showing
signs of pain. I'm sorry that your ferret did not have pain meds given.

I tend to use injectable butorphanol initially after surgery, and then have
lately been switching to using Metacam with good luck and what seems to be
adequate pain control with (at this point) no side effects seen. None of the
NSAIDS (and in fact few medications at all) are labeled for use in ferrets, of
course, and there is little information out there on safe dosing.
