Julie,
Every animal is going to react a little different to anesthesia and any meds that are given. So my experiences might be a little different then yours. When I brought Razor home this week he was Very VERY sleepy. But he did eat as soon as I got him home and drank some water. He was a little nauseous at first but seems to be ok now.
Keep him quiet, if he isn't normally caged cage him at first and don't let him climb or rough house too much, you don't want to tear any stitches.
As for pain meds, keep in mind that Pain travels through a pets body in the nervous system the same way it does for us. So if you would want drugs after a procedure like this the YES ask your vet to administer pain medication.
Both before and after surgery.
The American Animal Hospital Association reccomends that animals recieve at least 4 days worth of pain meds for a soft tissue surgery or 8 days or more for a bone surgery. Some animals will need more or less than this. Waiting to admisinster pain meds until you notice your pet is painful will only make it more difficult to control, so be proactive here.
As Dr Ruth stated in another post that she has had some good luck with Metacam so far, I would ask you vet about it, this will make your pet comfortable without feeling drowsy, If they don't have Metacam ask about Injectable Rimadyl for your ferret.
SO, in a nut shell, expect him to be sleepy at first, he might be crazy too. Every animal is different. Do ask for pain meds and take home too. Your vet will know what to do, just set a precedent for things that you expect and ask questions of your vet if you are in anyway uncomfortable. I hope this helps, good luck and keep us posted! Deborah
