Is it definite that this wasn't a contamination from someone's food? =
They are VERY aerobic according to a bacteriology site which makes me wonde=
r if they would survive in that location, but that is speaking aqs someone =
who does NOT know and if merely curious.
Here is part of write-up at

Family Acetobacteraceae
(Aceto=3Dvinegar, bacterion=3Drods) Recent cultures are Gram-negative,old c=
ultures are Gram-variable. =
The germs are rigorously aerobic, generally catalase positive having oxidat=
ive activities. They oxidize ethylic acid in acetic acid. =
...used in industry to produce vinegar and acetic acid. =
The best temperature for growing is 25 C to 30 C the best ph is 5.4 to 6.3.=
The genus Acetobacter is undesired in the production of beer and wine...Ac=
etobacter xilinum, Acetobacter aceti- and Acetobacter pasteurianus inhabits=
fruits and vegetables... =
The genus Gluconobacter with the old denomination of Acetomonas also belong=
s to the family of Acetobacteraceae. Gluconobacter oxidans is found in flow=
ers, fruits, vegetables, bakery yeast, beer, wine and soil... Growth is bes=
t at 25C to 30C and ph between 5.5 to 6.0. =
Here's stuff from a vet herbal poisoning section:

I'm sorry, Ardith. I don't know if this helps or not, but I doubt it. May=
be knowing that it is considered highly aerobic would help... I hope so.
