Remember that the body creates its own melatonin in response to enough darkness, AND that given the behavior of closely related mustelids, the domestic ferret ancestors are going to be individuals who lived in purloined burrows (extremely dark) and were active in dawn and dusk hours (crepuscular activity). That combination says that high melatonin levels are actually most natural for them, because they would have been in conditions where their own bodies were creating a lot of it.
