That is not the sort of answer a person can give from a distance. It's not the type of procedure which is involved that determines if ligation is going to be done, but the *condition of the Vena Cava itself* and that is something the vet doesn't discover until getting in there. It's done when it is a need and is not a choice which is made lightly, but when needed for a chance of survival, that's just that.
The one we had who almost needed it had standard surgery, but the adrenal tumor had invaded the Vena Cava itself. Such things can happen.
