A number of thing can cause a lot of swallowing.
Off hand: two causes of a lot of swallowing can be bacterial sinus infections (which they do get) and throat infections (ditto). Both can also cause wieght loss while they are really flaring.
Is the swallowing inceasing for a certain position? A sinus infection can drain more in certain positions.
