I was wondering if any vets out there or people who have used Dex instead of Pred can give me some info. I have discussed using Dex instead of pred for my insulinomic ferret. The pred has never worked very well for him but he is on a fairly high dose now. He is on .45ml prednisolone strength 30mg/5ml 2x a day. He is also of diazoxide. He weighs almost 5 pounds. How could I transition that? His meds only hold him for a few hours now, so I don't think it would make too much difference. When we switch over we will make sure someone is around at all times to keep an eye on him. My vet told me to find out more info on it since she isn't familar with using it. She isn't too familar with ferrets anyway. He has another vet, an exotic vet, but she has never used Dex on a patient, because pred usually works for them.
Also are the side effects similar to pred? The only side effect i have seen with the prednisolone is the muscle loss and weight gain, he was hefty to start with though.
