Mike,

If a ferret is in to the vet for other things and has had blood tests
etc, as well as an exploratory surgery to remove hairball and had
biopsies done, would they have checked for adrenal disease?

My ferret's tail is also looking pretty patchy but he's been in to the
vet a lot and we believe he's got IBS and has chicken allergies or
whatever. We haven't had a chance to get him back in for a check-up
yet and ask about the tail.

Adrenal disease seems really common though, if a ferret is having
health problems that is probably something that they look into right
away and would check on when tests are done right?

Unfortunately, hair loss at the base of the tail (on the rump) or on the body is typically a symptom of adrenal disease. Besides hair loss, it can make them itchy, which you also commented on, and several other symptoms.
