There's little to nothing in your book about ferrets with one kidney. And
although I have heard of them before, and heard of them doing well, I'd like to
have some solid (personal) research under my belt before he comes home.
Could you maybe suggest some reliable reading?
Not sure who you are directing this to specifically, but...
I have had several ferrets, both my own and those of clients, who for one
reason or another had to have a kidney removed. None of them had any kidney
problems from having had only one kidney. As far as reports on it, I'm not sure
there's much out there on ferrets. Basically, what you want to do is make sure
that there is always water available, make sure that water intake and urine
output is normal, have bloodwork and/or urine samples run regularly to check
that the kidney is continuing to function properly, and modify medications if
they are processed through the kidney if necessary.
Good luck - I doubt the loss of the kidney will be a problem, as long as all
else goes well.
