Decades ago we had one female (a retired breeder who came to us after a mounting male bit through one of her eyes) who developed impacted anal glands a lot. We discovered that if we took a car ride up to the area of the vet hospital that she would usually become energized enough that she would have them let go all over me, saving us all from the need for a vet appointment, but finally it just became too bad and got infected. At that point surgery to remove the anal glands kept her alive for years more.

Like anything else it is best done by a surgeon who knows the surgery well and has a successful past; in our case that wasn't an opinion at that time but luckily nothing went wrong due to the vet being talented in surgery.
