When my ferrets sleep outside the cage, they burrow into 'anti-mess'
blankets I've piled in corners and closets around the house. When they
sleep in the cage, they burrow into blankets, sweatshirts or thick
fabric sleep bags. Heck, they recently tore a hole in the top fabric
layer of an 'open top' hammock, and have taken to burrowing inside
that.
If you provide them with plenty of options for 'burrowing' out of the
light, they'll take advantage of them. Just make sure they've got
thick enough fabric blankets and sleep sacks to block out light, and
-- if possible -- keep electronics with 'always on' display lights
(VCRs, microwaves, etc.) out of the room they stay in.
