Started as a bruise, turned into a lump and then a scab and
then scab came off leaving a 1/4 inch deep pus fulled red
crater orginally.

Has your vet considered the possibility that this might be
from a spider bite? Obviously people and ferrets are
different, but my husband had a nasty spider bite a couple of
years ago that went through the stages you describe. The scab
was actually a big hunk of necrotized flesh, which is why in
his case a crater was left when it fell off. Just a thought...
