Not all reptiles carry salmonella, in fact, not all turtles do. You can have yours tested by the vet to see. I wouldn't own them if someone in the home was going through chemotherapy, or very poor immune system just because it is not worth taking the chance. IN those homes water should be boiled,or filtered and all foods cooked well. BUT good hand washing, same as when you prepare foods, will prevent any spread of the salmonella. I think it is more common on chicken/ poultry and eggs then from your reptile. I work with a shelter that rescues both ferrets and reptiles, and has children, and there have been no problems.
Just so people know they can keep both pets if they use certain precautions.

Thats whY i gave my Lizard away because of the Salmonella Poisoning not only
to my ferrets but Myself.
