Subject: Adrenal or Rat Tail?

I have a question as I'm getting concerned about one of my critters tails. Ripley just turned 3 - she is a very small 1.6 pound female who is deaf (and the joy of my 'business').
She lost a bunch of hair at the end of her tail (about 3/4 and inch - uneven loss, one side is heavier than the other) a couple months ago. She has little brown spots like black heads that are intermittent on teh skin.
My vet gave her some antibiotics and suggested the very real possibility of adrenal. One small tuft of hair has grown back on the very end of her tail but not enough for me to put aside my worries.
She has no other hair loss that I have noticed and her energy is good (slightly less than a kit but she still picks fights with my 3.8 pound male). No other systemic sign is visible. Save the sligthly bald tail.
Any thoughts- I guess I'm trying to get prepared for the possibility of adrenal. I'm so worried about surgery on my littlest girl - if it would be the thing to do...
