Subject: Furosemide Lowering Blood Sugar In Insulinomic Ferret

My ferret has had fluid buildup for a while, last weekend it got so bad his=
breathing got very labored. He got a 10ml lasix shot and his furosemide do=
sage (he was on a low dose) was upped to 8ml 3x a day. He has end stage ins=
ulinoma. Diazoxide still works for him, but pred. doesn't. I give him some =
karo syrup in his duck soup and that keeps his blood sugar up for 2-4 hours=
. He had excellent blood sugars until I upped his furosemide. Then 6 hours =
after he got the medicine his blood sugar plummeted and no amount of karo w=
ould keep it up for more than a half hour. It wore of in a few hours and hi=
s blood sugar would go up again until he had more furosemide then the same =
thing would happen 6 hours later. I lowered it to .55mg and it's the blood =
sugar is a little better, it dropped very low this morning though. It took =
me 20 minutes to bring him around, that has never happened before. The lowe=
r dosage has allowed the fluid to build up again though. So today he had an=
other 10ml shot of lasix, and the vet sent me home with lasix pills. I had =
furosemide suspension before. Anyone ever experienced this? Is there anothe=
r diuretic I could use that wouldn't effect his blood sugar. He had been do=
ing so much better. The shot he had Monday didn't seem to effect his blood =
sugar, so maybe that's the way to go. The vet thinks his heart is the reaso=
n for the fluid buildup. She said when she listened to it today it sounded =
irregular. We are going to do x-rays as soon as we can get him more stable.=
