Hi, Linda, and everyone else,
Our vet only gives lupron when surgery is not an
option. He still believes the only cure for adrenal
disease is surgery.
Having said that... Podo's adrenal disease recurred
at age nine and a half and he had a host of other
medical problems. Our vet gave a monthly depot. Podo
showed rapid improvement after the first shot. You
shouldn't have to wait more than a few weeks to know
if dosage x is going to work.
Our vet did not wait for symptoms to recur. Podo got
the one month depot like clockwork every month until
he died about six months later.
We had discussed the possibility of an increased
dosage if his starting dosage didn't work. Podo was a
big boy (over three pounds) and I believe he got
something like 200mcg. (I'm working from memory and I
am 500 miles from home. I can check on that.) Our
vet said that while dosages up to 500mcg are possible
he also said that Lupron at higher dosages is not
without problems. I'm sorry, I don't remember the
side effects he mentioned at the time, but they
weren't good.
FWIW, Podo had right adrenal surgery with vena cava
ligation at seven and a half years old. Our vet
reports a less than 50% success rate with Lupron for
alleviating adrenal symptoms. He really prefers the
surgical route when possible.
All the best,
Caity and the fearsome foursome
