I had one ferret who had both adrenal glands surgically removed in 2 separa=
te surgeries. She was very strong, even though she was old, and she recove=
red well. We shelled out at least $2000 for those surgeries. Since then, =
our younger ferret, Ellie got an adrenal disease also. By this time, our v=
et had become confident in Lupron as an alternative to surgery. We decided=
to try it, and see if it would work for our ferret. We were very lucky. =
Ellie had one shot of Lupron last year and her symptoms only recently retur=
ned. We brought her in for a second shot just last week. If she needs one=
shot per year at $50 a pop, that will still be much less expensive than su=
rgery. Even though I have a great deal of faith in the surgeons at my anim=
al hospital, it is always better to avoid such an intrusive procedure if po=
ssible. Anyway, my advice to any owner of a ferret with adrenal disease wo=
uld be to try the Lupron and see if it works for your ferret. If it doesn'=
t, then opt for surgery. You will only have "wasted" $50 or $100, and you =
will be sure that you've made the right decision.
