Well,Ellie went to the vet this morning. It turns out it was an abcess, but it couldn't have been an anal gland abcess because she was descented and has no anal glands. After the vet drained most of it and the swelling wentr down, we were able to see a pari if little dots near her anus, which look like bite marks. We think that Petey, our one year old ferret was playing a little too rough. I guess it was just a coincidence that Ellie was injured (by Petey) the same day that my husband stepped on her (he thought he only stepped on her tail, so he could have been right about that) and another coincidence that the abcess was in the same location that an anal gland would be (if she had one!). Well, the drainage seemed painful, but she's much better now. Ellie will be on antibiotics for a few days, and hopefully Petey will learn to be a bit gentler in his playing...

Thanks for all your input and support!
Oh, and ferretmommy1, that is a really sad story. I am very sorry for your loss.
