Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows anything about thyroid disease in ferrets. It seems to be rare, but I am wondering if it is just rarely diagnosed or even looked for. Does thyroid disease in ferrets present the same problems as it would a dog or cat?
My ferret has had progressive skin problems for about a year now. He has orange patchy stained skin along his back that eventually turns to a build up of crust and falls off. He has never itched at his back. He has been treated with everything possible so far... skin scrapings, ivermectin, hypoallergenic diet, Advantage for possible flea allergy, antihistamines, antibiotics, lupron, prednisolone.....with no response shown in skin. The dermatologists want to do a skin bioposy next but it could be risky with his heart disease...
Does anyone know what the symtoms are for thyroid disease in ferrets and what kind of tests are the most accurate? Neeko has never had his thyroid tested and I am wondering if I should do that before a biopsy to determine whether his skin is thyroid related.
Thank you very much
Tara
