Hi Patti,
I used to add a baking powder type stuff to the litter before I switched to the stuff I'm on now, it wasn't working great so I switched after some research. We now use Swheat Scoop with both our ferrets and our cat and it works great! No odour from the ferrets, some from the cat, it's non-toxic, flushable, and it even clumps! We've been using it for about 2 years now, and although it is a little pricey, because it keeps the odours down, we think it's worth it. We also don't waste as much because it clumps and you can just pick out the pee-clumps and flush them, instead of periodically emptying the whole litter box. Now instead of doing complete litter changes once a week we do them once a month.
Of course the smell issue could differ with the number of ferrets you have and what you're feeding them, some food make for smellier poops than others. I only have 2 ferrets, so their litter box doesn't get dirty as quickly as someone with more ferrets.
Hope this helps,
Terri
