Subject: Abnormal Left Kidney Removed

My ferret, Dala, had her left kidney removed a few weeks ago. She was init=
ially scheduled for right adrenal cryo-surgery but when the vet =93opened=94=
her up, he found that her left kidney was abnormal. The left kidney was=
about 90% smaller than the right kidney (about the size of a kidney bean).=
On this kidney was a mass of tissue that was about two times the size of =
the left kidney. The kidney had blood supply and the ureter did not appear=
to be abnormal.

The kidney was sent off for histopathology and the report came back that th=
e tissue removed was indeed kidney tissue and that it was dead (end stage r=
enal failure). The histopathologist did not specify what tissue was attach=
ed to the kidney and because of the Thanksgiving week we haven=92t been abl=
e to request analysis of the tissue. We were hoping he would take a cross =
section of the kidney with the growth, but I=92m guessing they will only do=
them separate and charge for two. The vet suspects this growth might be a=
drenal tissue. =

I was present during her left adrenal surgery last year and the vet showed =
me all of her major organs and never commented that her left kidney was abn=
ormal. She also had radiographs last year before the adrenal surgery by an=
other different vet and he did not see anything abnormal on the film (we we=
re looking for a possible blockage).

Both of my vet are at a loss for why just one kidney would fail and shrink =
as it did. He said sometimes a kidney can never be functioning and never d=
evelop, but he has not seen where just one kidney dies. So, we are not sur=
e what has caused this and we do not know if what caused this will also cau=
se her right kidney to fail.

She does have insulinoma and I do have a glucometer to monitor her blood gl=
ucose. It has been a little low at times where I needed to increase her do=
se of Prednisolone, but it has never been higher than 100.

I have not been able to find any information on the internet that describes=
these kidney issues. I would like to know if anyone has had any similar f=
erret health issues or any ideas of where my vet and I can go from here. =

Thank you,
