Hi, everyone,

Two of my remaining four ferrets, Lady Ayeka and
Nyssa, have lymphoma and are now going downhill.
They'll be back at the vet's in the morning to see
what, if anything, can be done. They are both six and
a half years old. Nyssa, who has gone downhill very
quickly, has no other known health problems other than
adrenal surgery more than three and a half years ago
with no recurrence. Ayeka, who had her diagnosis
confirmed by a biopsy in early August, has had the
disease progressing more slowly until now. She had
insulinoma and adrenal surgery in August at the same
time as the biopsy.

Ayeka and Nyssa are the sixth and seventh ferrets,
respectively, who have had lymphoma in our business in
the past 15 months. The other five ferrets all died
rather quickly after diagnosis. (In all fairness two
of them were extremely old, as in 9.5 and just about
10.)

One person who I am sure is reading this and who I
consider quite knowledgeable and well informed called
my business "the largest lymphoma cluster I have ever
heard of". I know there is a viral transmission
theory (quite unproven) out there. It's also possible
I've just had incredibly bad luck with this particular
disease.

I guess I'm just venting my frustration and wondering
if anyone has any thoughts or theories about
prevention. I still have two healthy ferrets (Romana,
age six, and Chin Soon, age one) and I intend on
adopting another pair once Nyssa and Ayeka are gone
provided there is no untoward risk of them getting
lymphoma as well.

Regards,
Caity and the frustrated and fearful four
