What people are concerned about are more other added medications in some compounds.
Here is a place when Google really helps people. For those not used to it just go to http://www.google.com and search.
Croscarmellose
used in making tablets:

Cellulose is just plant fiber
"Dicalcium Phosphate":
can even be used as a mineral supplement for some animals:

My suspicion is that this is there as a preservative though it might be there as minerals to help with absorption of the melatonin if that is useful, but probably some member chemists or pharmacists can tell us a lot better.
"Vegetable Magnesium Stearate"
Boy, does this one ever bring up mineral supplements in a search. It's almost 2 a.m. and all 30 first hits are for mineral supplements.
Silica is just silica like in quartz. I don't know what any possible use of it would be in the pills. Someone lese likely will.
It looks like "Vegetable Stearic Acid" is used in making some pill coatings.
you won't find melatonin by itself. There will be a matrix to carry it and likely preservatives.
Given what one person encountered, people need to make sure that the melatonin isn't in a combination medication, though. That usually means that there will be an ACTIVE INGREDIENTS portion of the label showing other things. We all have seen the technical names of the OTC (over the counter) meds we use which can be dangerous for ferrets. (More info on dangerous OTCs can be found in the FHL Archives at
