Our rule of thumb is that if we can imagine our ferrets getting rubber off something then the item isn't one the ferrets have access to. We found out twice with toys said to be safe that if one is persistent (a female) or strong jawed (a male) that some toys just can't be used during their lifetimes. Those were with two different styles of balls -- the first an extra hard rubber one that was supposed ot be impossible for them to chew. Not so. We later used it for a very effective roll-on, roll-off bathtub plug which was easy to put out of the ferrets' reach as I recall. The male had his own trick. He could crunch ping pong balls with his jaws so we removed those for years.
