Subject: ferret with string strangulation injury to leg

Byron got a loose string from his sleepy sack wrapped around his leg..we
think it was left in place around 4 hrs. The last time we checked him he was fine
and we went out. When we returned we found him tied up in his sleepy sack.

I immediately freed his leg. There was no ER vet to see him and the tech
said gentle massage and hot and cold compresses to try to get the circulation
back into the leg. The leg is horribly swollen. We saw the vet first thing the
next morning. He prescribed DMSO to be applied below the line where the
string was wrapped twice a day and antibiotics. How long does it take before we
see any improvement in the swelling. It is seeping clear fluid and has a few
clear fluid filled blisters. The vet said he has circulation both venous and
arterial. He clipped a toe nail and showed me the cap refill on his leg.

Its still swollen and very tight feeling. He is trying to moving it and use
it now. Am I being to impatient with this process? I just don't want him to
get gangrene or something and get real sick and die. How long does it take
before the vet and I will know if this leg is really going to heal or need
amputation?

Anyone out there with experience with this type of injury and recovery? Pics
of healing process would be helpful too. I am very concerned and worried.
Its his right hind leg.

We go back to the vet on monday. He got hurt on friday.
Thank you very much!
