It's definitely a personality thing. When we got Podo
and Kodo they had been eating really crappy food. We
started mixing in Totally Ferret. Kodo liked the new
food so much he dug out the TF and skipped the old
stuff. he'd been eating. Podo copied him a day or
two later. They were pushing seven years old at the
time.
OTOH, neither Kodo nor Podo were picky eaters, and it
really showed on Kodo :)
In the situation that was originally described I'd
probably mix in little bits of other high quality
foods or offer them as treats to see if there is
something that's more to the little monster's taste :)
