Hi Roary and Yvonne,
Contagious ear problems makes me think of ear mites
with a secondary bacterial ear infection. When ear infections
spread to the middle ear and inner ear they can cause the
vestibular signs that you are describing (head tilt, ataxia, circling,
nausea, anorexia). Rarely the infection can actually spread to
the central nervous system. As for treatment suggests, I would
recommend Baytril otic ear drops, Pediapred, Baytril orally,
and an ear mite medication (milbemite, acarexx, ivomec, etc).
Usually once you get rid of the mites and ear infection, the head
tilt will resolve, and the ferret will return to close to normal.
ADV is another disease to consider. ADV can cause problems
with the nervous system. There is a simple blood test (CEP thru
United Vacicnes) that can be done to test for ADV.
Happt New Year,
Jerry Murray, DVM
