Hi Lucie,
Sounds like Merlin has prostate problems from
his adrenal problem. Has your vet been able to
palpate an enlarged prostate, cysts, or abscess?
Has an ultrasound been done of his bladder/prostate?
If you are using the once a month version of Lupron
then you are basically treating him for 4 weeks then not
treating him for 2-4 weeks. Lets use it every 4 weeks!
Propecia can be increased to 1mg once a day.
Melatonin can also be added (1mg once a day, about
7-8 hours post sunrise).
When he is under anesthesia there is relaxation of the smooth
muscles in his prostate, that is why it so easy to express
his bladder then. There is a human prostate medicine called
Flomax (tamsulosin hydrochloride) that also does that.
Perhaps that would help Merlin out. You have to be careful
expressing his bladder. A large bladder has the chance of
rupturing. Time to ultrasound his bladder/prostate to find
out what is actually causing his problem.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
