Hi, everyone,

Little Avon is deteriorating again. He's incontinent, not even trying to
move before going. The two vets involved have decided that further testing
isn't going to be helpful. Oh, we might find out what is really wrong, but
with all we have eliminated it won't change his course of treatment or
improve him prognosis. The consensus is we don't want to put him through
it. All the remaining possible causes range from really bad (spinal injury
or tumor) to worse (lymphoma).

We've started him on steroids (pediapred) in the hope that it might improve
his mobility a little or stabilize him at the least. Dexamethasone was also
mentioned as a possibility in the future.

Last night we let him back with the other ferrets. We have to clean him up
and clean up after him a whole lot but he is in much better spirits. Being
with his buddies was all he wanted. I believe mental health is just as
important as anything else in this situation.

If he gets too much worse we're going to have to start thinking the
unthinkable and decide what's best for him. I hope we don't have to go
there.
Regards,
Caity and the seven worried weasels, plus Ker Avon
