Haley,

I composed a message to you from this site, but it wouldn't accept it because it was too long, so I sent you a message telling you to email me and I would email you my info.

I have a bunch of stuff to share that I have learned as my boy, Buddy, (he's 4) was diagnosed with low blood sugar Weds. My vet did not prescribe pediapred, and told me to monitor him, keep clear Kayro on hand in case he had an episode, and make sure he is eating multiple meals a day. Then he left town for 10 days so I have had NOBODY to confer with about this. I have learned a lot though.

Kodo needs to be eating, and not just Nutri-cal. In fact my vet did say to give a LITTLE of Nitrical, if needed. But Buddy is eating his Totally Ferret just fine on his own and he free feeds so I've been watching him and he is eating quite regular. I have been finger feeding Gerbers 2 chicken baby food, warmed as well, just to get him used to it. He wouldn't eat it from the saucer warmed, but he would eat it from my fingers no problem. Tastes better on dads fingers I suppose.. :-)

As for the water, I would think that like people with Diabetes, our sick weasels may want to drink more too. Don't know. At least he is drinking. When he's not drinking I would be more concerned about that. Talk to your vet for sure though.

You need to try and make him eat though. not just nutri-cal. He needs to eat good food, several times a day. Totally Ferret is all my ferret eats, it's good food.

Just keep your eyes on him and keep the Kayro syrup near just in case he zones out and apply a little to his gums if he does. In about a minute he will come around, but he HAS to eat after that sugar high, or he will crash even lower than when he had the episode. The high protein dinner after the Kayro is important to make sure the blood sugar level stays even.

Most important though, from all I have learned is that they do NOT need sugary anything. High protein is what they need and multiple small meals, to help keep those levels stable.

If you want to discuss all this, please feel free to email me.
