Subject: rectal prolapse
Message-ID: <57A1B6B0.120452DA.0BFD9250@aol.com>
I just adopted a 12 week old female who was recovering from a minor rectal prolapse. She was being treated with Panalog topically 2 times a day. Sunday night she prolapsed again pretty badly, and I rushed her to my vet Monday morning. He gave her an IM injection of corticosteroids (dexamethadone I believe) and gentamicin and betamexathone topically twice a day. The swelling was not as bad today, and the prolapse seems to have retracted somewhat. She's on a dry diet (Zupreem and Totally Ferret) and I've been offering her watered down chicken baby food w/ Nutrical mixed in to keep her eating.
I'm having trouble finding any information on prolapsing in ferrets. Is this common in kits? Wwhat causes it to happen? What is the general prognosis for a ferret that has prolapsed multiple times? Is this likely to reoccur again? Is there anything that can be done to prevent it? Is her diet alright, or should it be adjusted?
Thanks in Advance,
Jacie and
