Apparently when they were first making Lupron, they were making it in a
preconstituted form that would remain stable for quite some time. I have a bottle
of it that I am using, and the bottle reads: "Leuprolide Acetate Injection
5mg/ml. Each ml contains: Leuprolide Acetate 5mg in an aqueous solution with
sodium chloride sufficient to render solution isotonic. 9 mg benzyl alcohol
added as preservative, pH may have been adjusted with sodium hydroxide and/or
acetic acid, and water for injection." Why don't they still make it this way --
it is certainly more cost effective to buy a bottle of this, use as much as
needed, and save the rest for later rather than buying 10 mg of it only to use
500 mcg. A friend of mine got this in 1996 or so while doing research with it
and horses, and it is apparently still good as two of my ferrets are on it and
doing well. Could a compounding pharmacist replicate this? Don't see why
not, will have to look into that. I suppose it all boils down to the almighty
dollar -- if they can sell you 10 mg of powder because that's the smallest
dosage it comes in and it can't be reconstituted until time of application under
the premise of it going bad otherwise, then why not? While doing errands today,
I will stop by the pharmacy. It's just irritating and unnecessary when I
have a bottle of it in my hands. Liquid gold.
