Hi Roary,
Actually melatonin does more than just mask
the symptoms. In the University of Wisconsin
oral melatonin study, there was no significant
change in the size of the adrenal glands (ie did not
get bigger but did not get smaller) after 12 months!
Plus the vulvas and prostates did reduce in size along
with the hair regrowth.
It may help as a preventative by lowering LH and stopping the
stimulation to the adrenal glands. More work is needed to
study melatonin as a preventative, and its long term effectiveness
as a treatment. I am currently working with melatonin implants
and hope to have more answers in the future.
Now for your 2 specific questions: Surgery is still the first choice
for young, healthy, adrenal ferrets (ie your 2 year old). It would be
fine to supplement your older guys (how old?) to hopefully prevent
adrenal problems.
Hope that helps,
