I don't totally disagree with this, but really, a lot depends on the level of supportive care he gets. He needs plenty of nutrition to get him through this and that means you're probably going to have to force him to eat no matter how much he doesn't want to. He may need fluids and it's probably a good idea that you get your vet to show you how to do that yourself and how to determine when/if he needs them. It's going to be tough going for a few weeks, but he CAN survive this.
