For a terminal ferret it is pretty much whatever he can tolerate. We've had a tiny female on 5 mg per day of Prednisolone. We went with Prednisolone instead of Prednisone because it skips the liver processing step so in some ferrets it packs a better punch.

Have you considered Lasix (another often "pretty much whatever they can tolerate" type of med to decrease some of the fluid in his lungs?

Also, have you discussed pain meds?

I'm not a vet; just know what it can be like...
