Meri-
I am not a vet , but as a shelter worker I have to comment that these sound
like lymph nodes- the axillary ones are in the pit areas of the legs , the
back may be the mesenteric ( sp?) node. All these can become enlarged due
to systemic infection-- or fro lymphoma.

The sections removed from one of the nodes should help with the diagnosis.
