I am posting at the request of Claudia Johnson of the Oxford Ferret Rescue. A friend
of hers has a ferret who was adopted from Oxford. We received the ferret in as a
surrender at 1 year of age. No prior history is known. Heartworms were diagnosed
in this ferret by x-ray and echocardiogram. The IDEXT snap test will be done later
this week. The vet has spoke with Dr. [consulting vet name removed by moderator]
regarding his treatment. At the present time pro-heart is what is being used as
treatment. The right side of the heart is enlarged. The ferret is on enalaprio, lasix,
digoxin, and pediapred for insulinoma. His initial symptoms were lethargy, and
moderate coughing. Are there any new treatments that anyone is using for
heartworms. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
